On a recent trip to Elk State Park in Elk County PA, I was fortunate to be there during the rut. At first, we were a little disappointed that we didn't see any elk. As the day wore on the bulging started, not many at first, then just before dark out of the forest they came to forage in the open fields. What an adrenaline rush. There were hundreds everywhere in small groups with a bull Elk in each. The bugling got intense, with an occasional scuffle between the bulls trying to increase their harem. I have seen elk before in Montana but never this close, quite an experience to witness first hand.
