  • FISHING NEWS: "Rain Tax" Introduced to Offset Chesapeake Bay Pollution Caused by Storm Runoff

The EPA has mandated that Maryland raise funds from its ten largest counties to offset the deleterious effects that storm water has on the health Chesapeake Bay. The EPA decreed in 2010 that Maryland had to stop so much stormwater runoff from draining into the Bay, a project that would cost $14.8 billion. To pay for that, authorities decided to tax "impervious surfaces", which could be anything that prevents rain from soaking into the ground. Roads, driveways, roofs, etc., could possibly all be taxed, and the estimate of taxable impervious surfaces will be gleaned from satellite images.
