It’s been a loooooong winter in the Chesapeake Bay region, but with seventy degree temperatures predicted this week from the Bay Bridge in Maryland all the way south to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT) in Virginia, Spring is within sight.

There have been some people confused about the official starting day of Maryland’s Rockfish season this year. Mark your calendar, the official starting time is 5:00 am on April 19th. If you want to kick the season off with some fun and a chance to win some glory, your name forever posted in the rafters and your name all over the press, check out the Annual Opening Day Rockfish Fishing Tournament hosted by the Boat Yard Bar and Grill in Annapolis, MD.

Speaking of Opening Day, rockfish season is on the forefront of anglers mind in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay and the fishing reports suggest a few anglers have been getting out to test the waters with some catch and release fishing. Tidal Fisher Get the Net fished over the weekend and landed some quality striped bass, a sure sign the colder winter has not deterred them from making their way up the Bay (pictured is Get the Net crew with one of many nice stripers landed.)

Their spread was a daisy chain and three tandem rigs fished up close to the boat, another daisy chain about 300’+ back, a small four arm chartreuse umbrella rig about 250’ back with no additional weather and another 6oz parachute. All fish were landed the four arm umbrella rig in 50’ to 60’ feet of water. All the marks they spotted were in about 40’ - 50’ of water. As for the area, worked the edges starting in the Cove Point area. That should provide you some good information to get started if you are heading out over the next few days in Maryland’s Chesapeake and be sure to check the Maryland Fishing Forum for more details on this report and others.

I received a note from Don Hammond of the Dolphin Research Program with some good news that the dolphin are showing up off south Florida, the Keys and the Abacos in the Bahamas. A few have been reported off Georgia as well. Another sure sign that Spring is making its way up the coast. To learn more about the Dolphin tagging project and latest research check out Don’s site Dolphinfish Research Program.

One last note, the results came in for the 2013 Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament’s top black drum. The winners were Otis Ricks, Jr. with a whopping 85lb black drum and in second place Corey Linebaugh weighing in an 18lb 10oz black drum. Congratulations to both of you on super catches.

That about wraps it up, here’s to a good week of fishing!
