  • Virginia Fishing Report Updated June 19, 2014

Flounder fishing has taken off. The largest flounder are right where they are supposed to be, at the CBBT. Flounder weighing over ten pounds were caught both by live-baiters and wire-liners this week. Flounder are also being caught in the Back River Reef area, 36A, Hampton Bar, in the York River, inside the seaside inlets of the Eastern Shore, and some have begun to show at the
    Cell area.

Big red drum continue to be caught at on the shoals at the mouth of the bay with night fishing being best. During the day, schools of big red drum are being encountered by anglers looking for cobia. Cobia fishing is very good with both sight fishing and chumming producing fish. The nicer days favor sight fishing while rough and cloudy days favor the chummers.

Spanish mackerel are being caught along the oceanfront and inside the lower bay on up to the Cell area. Spadefish can be found over many wrecks and at the Chesapeake Light Tower and the CBBT. Big sheepshead are at the CBBT.

Amberjack are at the South Tower. Big jack crevelle have been sighted off of the oceanfront and inside the lower bay. Bottom fishing for tilefish is good.

Offshore fishing is rather excellent. Gaffer dolphin catches are very good. Some very large wahoo have been caught. Yellowfin tuna and the occasional bigeye tuna continue to bite. White marlin are around and it has been the best blue marlin fishing that we have seen in years.

VBAC 2015 Cobia Classic Tournament Results

Twenty-one teams competed for prize money totaling $2,100 this year for the Virginia Beach Anglers Club Cobia Classic. The weather was pleasant, some winds made the afternoon ride interesting- but overall a solid fishable day for those chummers and sight casters alike. Following the start of the 3pm weigh-in boats started lining up with plenty of cobia to be placed on the scales. Roughly 60% of the boats came back with a cobia to compete for the prizes. While most fish teetered in that 20 lb range (plus or minus) the top three fish distinguished themselves beating the pack with some heavy fish.

    First
Place fish weighing a hefty 63 1/2 lbs, caught by Captain Jorge Lead's team netted them $1,300.00

Second Placer fish weighing 40 lbs 1 ounce caught by Captain Rudy Levassuer's team netted them $500.00

Third Place fish weighing 29 lbs 1 ounce caught by Captain Aubry Williams team netted them $300.00

Check out the post on the Virginia Fishing Forum for honorable mention catches.

    Congratulations to all!
