The fishing report this week is that there are not that many fishing reports. Don’t blame me or fellow fishermen for not reporting, blame Mother Nature who has served up windy conditions almost daily. The wind does just just make the ride uncomfortable, it also makes it hard to find the fish when you can even get out.

Fishing is good in Virginia waters! I think this fishing report from MWills98 sums up some of the things happening in Virginia’s waters. “Hottest action I have ever seen, been trying for a day like this the past three years. Alex, Dave and I hit the oceanfront around 9 trolling for kings and on the lookout, wasn't long before we find a pod with dozens of cobia and sharks swarming the boat, hooked up a couple nice cobia but lines crossed and mine snaps off. Dave gets a 53'' release after some debate whether to let the first one go. Back on the fish, I catch a short, Alex catches a 49" keeper, Dave gets another one on a triple hook up. Another pod ...

Offshore, it is billfish time. The Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament was held this past weekend. Seventy-five boats fished 2 days each. They caught a total of 433 billfish: 357 white marlin, 61 sailfish, and 15 blue marlin. Uno Mas with Capt. Tom Lynskey took first place honors by catching 12 white marlin and 3 sailfish. We all know Virginia Beach is a fishing paradise and was nice to be recognized by Sport Fishing Magazine’s Top Ten List of Places to Catch a World Record. Thanks Sport Fish Mag for the kudos!

The Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament is going on this week. A tournament maximum of 75 boats will be chasing billfish. Capt. Ken Neill said that the bite is good so there should be some impressive catches. In addition to some very good billfish action, there are good numbers of wahoo being caught and dolphin fishing is good. Down around the Point, off of Oregon Inlet, there are good numbers of yellowfin tuna and blackfin tuna. Wahoo fishing is very good out of Hatteras. The best of the billfish action has been from the Triple 0s on north, mostly between 40 and 100 fathoms.

Captain Ken Neill said that cobia fishing is very good. Fish are being caught by sight-casting and by setting up on chum slicks. The Cobia Cup was this past weekend. Capt. Jorj Head won it with a 60.9-pound fish. Jorj also won the Hampton Creek Cobia Tournament earlier this summer. Jorj catches most of his cobia sight fishing but he won both of these tournaments by chumming. Capt. Head will be fishing the Chesapeake Bay Cobia Classic this coming weekend.

Flounder fishing was excellent this week, especially at the CBBT where catches of limits were the norm. Some boats reported catching over 50 flounder in an outing. Fellow Tidal Fisher Kevin Smith filed a report from a recent trip and said he fished on Paige II Charter with Craig Page, Bill Polk, Hillary Polk & my lovely bride Sandy. They fished the incoming in the morning at CBBT and stayed very tight to the structure most of the day. They ended up with ...
