Default Sandy Point - Swim across the bay

does anybody know about an event about swimming across the bay this wkend? I just don't want to tow the boat 50 miles then have to turn around at the ramp or fish somewhere else.

The Chesapeake Bay Swim is this Sunday, June 10. The 4.4 mile swim is the "top tier" of open water swims in the country. Like the Boston Marathon is to running, entrants have to demonstrate their competence by competing well and finishing with an adequate time in another certified open water swim before they are allowed to enter the Bay swim. 600 swimmers are allowed in the event.

They swim from the beach Sandy Point SP to Kent Island. Things get started at Sandy Point at 5:30, but the first wave of swimmers doesn't actually hit the water until 9:30am. They swim between the two spans, and end up on a sandy beach on Kent Island. They pick up people who aren't going "fast enough" (keeping to a minimum schedule), so the scheduled completion time of 1:10pm is pretty accurate.

Between event boats, participants, spectators and friends, media, etc. I imagine that SP will be a zoo that morning, and there will be lots of traffic (vehicle and boat). Everybody ends up on the other side, with shuttle busses to get 'em back.

The event's main link is at

How will fishing and boating on the bay be like knowing that there are 600 people in the water.

Get there early and you'll be fine. As long as you clear the inlet to SPSP before 9:00 and stay fishing until after 1:00 - you should have no problems. Unless you want to fish the bridge or go from south of the bridge to north of the bridge or visversa. They close access under the bridge except for the eastern channel during the morning and as the swimmers move east they let you cross to the west. If you go, keep your radio on and follow the instructions of the CG and the CGA - there will be plenty of them!

Most of the fish are off Chesapeake Beach or south anyway. Launch at CB or BP and you should do well.
