    Default Chain bridge

The first Chain bridge post all season? Well, it isn't pretty but here it is.

    I still stink like shad….

I hit above the bridge yesterday afternoon in hopes of some smallmouth and maybe walleye. When I got there the tide was low but the water clarity was almost perfect with a nice tint to it about 1-2 feet of visibility. I saw two guys snagging gizzard shad every cast. They seemed to enjoy themselves. Then they leave and I'm still working the bottom with a Texas rigged tube with no hits, or snagged fish. Then comes two fly guys. They proceed to hook gizzard shad in the tail every single cast almost. One guy even had one of those expensive long handle landing nets and lands the fish for guess what... HIS CLIENT and even proceeds to pose for a picture. yes, that's right, he was guiding his client to snag gizzard shad. I later walked up to him and said have you caught any hickories or Americans’ yet, (knowing what the answer would be) “yes, we've been killing them all week." (Maybe he didn’t hear me.) Unbelievable. I later educated them as to what he was catching but was told they were snagging themselves and that every few fish were caught in the mouth. They were awfully thick in his defense, I will say that. Try a circle hook with your fly, you will never snag another fish. This guide will later only target snakeheads. Those he might get to bite but in the spring I've seen hundreds upon hundreds of them up there in the eddies and absolutely ignore everything that comes near them so after only a season or two trying, I will also say that most of those spring snakeheads are also snagged.

So, who wants to book a guide all day so we can snag gizzards with fly rods? Wow, that would be so cool. I fly fish but that right there just gave every fly fishermen a bad name. At least fish for fish. Sometimes you have to use different techniques. If the fifth fish you caught comes in backwards, chances are your sixth and 7th will too. Time to move, or try something else.

Back to my report. No walleye, quite a few nasty slimy gizzards and one nice smallmouth about 16 inches and its twin but it was a largemouth both caught on the new Berkley havoc creature type baits, texas rigged. Oh yea, I had over a dozen gizzards hooked near the mouth on Rapala x rap jerk baits. Think they were hitting them too?

One more quick comment. when I walked back up to the canal I spotted several, maybe 100 or more carp sitting in the stagnant, low water in the canal. every now and then one would jump. Plus every now and then one would slurp up the floating scum which looked a lot like feces to me. Being that I had planned to go for walleye and smallmouth I did not bring the fly rod that was sitting in my car. So I rigged a shad fly off of a float and cast it at the individual carp. Could you believe it on one cast that I didn't spook the fish I actually had a take. The fly landed right on his head and the fish instantly took it in his mouth. I set the hook and my whole rig game flying back at me where I had to do an invasive maneuver to dodge it. It proceeded to get stuck in the tree behind me. He took it in his mouth and rejected it that fast. Should have brought the 3wt that was rigged and ready to go on my rod rack in the SUV. I think they would be all over a damsel fly nymph or something similar. Might just have to go back strictly for the carp. The canal looks basically drained with hardly any water in it but there are still carp around. Good to hear for when those berries come falling. I’d say without any more high water events the shad fishing should pick up by the weekend. Maybe sooner but rain may wash that thought away for the time being.

I am wondering if it is worth a trek to the Rapp now that Mudshad are in the Potomac. The Rapp tends to be a week ahead of the Potomac and 2 weeks ahead of the Susq.

Dunno how many times I have seen/heard gizzards being confused with the good shad at Chain Bridge... not so much on the Susky though, they know their shads. Dang gizzards can nearly drive you outta there when they are in thick. It's almost a waste to trying to fishing though them with a jig.

I'm thinking of checking out Fletchers tomorrow, more so just to see if its still there and get a license... and maybe, just maybe, catch a hickory. Might be some decent wperch at Fletchers too.

Thanks for the report. Rumor has it the shad cam is 'shad free' currently. Read some shad have been caught mid-bay area, few not many.
I haven't been to the river lately...may wander down with the dogs to check it out this weekend.

Good report Salmo, I just spoke with a friend who fishes the Delaware River up in PA, he said the Shad just showed up in the last couple days so it should be any day here for us.

Just tell him you'll let him keep all the fish to feed his family

Heck, I eat gizzard shad raw fairly frequently.

He probably spent a lot of money on his MasterCard to hire a guide and catch those shad. Isn't this a gizzard shad in this MasterCard commercial?
