Yes they work as advertised. Make sure you do not have nails, screws, loose wood, etc. that would hinder the action of the balls going up and down the piling. I do put a hook at the top of the piling so the line could never go over the top and slip off (if the tide ever got that high). Lastly I also use a spring line to keep fore and aft tension off of the tideminders.
