Default Trying to mount my tv above the fireplace

    Hello all,

I want to mount my 50" TV over the fireplace. However, when I went to find studs or brick in the wall, it seems to be a false chimney breast. I can find nothing but hollow wall. This is a rental, but with plenty of existing wall damage (Dozens and dozens of wall anchors, for instance. Previous tenent must not have owned a stud finder). Should I cut a hole in the wall to find the real structural wall? Build something in front of the false wall? Glue a piece of plywood over the wall directly behind where the tv will be and attach the tv to that?

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have!

    Noah

Why not put a hole in the wall where your tv is going to be to take a good look at what's going on in there? The hole will be covered by the TV anyway...
