    Default Female Crabs

    Im crabbing from a pier on the Piankatank (Deep Point area) in Va and all of the sudden I'm getting lots of small females (Sally's) my question is WHY now, why so many?

    They are spawning and have eggs.

    During the seasonal life cycle, in late summer and fall the fertilized females migrate from the upper Bay areas to areas nearer the mouth to spawn in the fall or to overwinter by burrowing into the sediment (mud) and spawn in the spring.

    He said they are "Sallys" not sooks so they are not fertilized yet.
