The YOY report is out. Way below average this year. 3.4 vs. avg. 11.6. Read report on DNR website.
Time for DNR to step up and make a move to protect those cows.

No, I think they need to commission a study group to work with a specially selected team of monetarily motivated individuals to look at it for a couple more years....or else put it on the congressional schedule.
    Grrrrr....

Depending on which chart you look at, I’ll put this into perspective, AGAIN. I am assuming the 3.42 number is the overall average from all sampling areas.

The 20-22” fish being caught this year were from the 2015 class which had an index of 24.2. The following years were from the Baywide Mean Chart:

    2016-2.2
    2017-13.9
    2018-14.8
    2019-3.37

That means the absolute best we have to look forward to are the classes from 17/18 which are roughly HALF of what we had to fish from this year.

The last 4 years COMBINED only add up to 50% more than what we had this year.

    Fact: Overall stock declared overfished
Fact: Spawning age females below target threshold

Anybody who doesn’t think it’s time to shut it down is lying to themselves.

The white and yellow perch didn’t have good spawns either. Better eat crappie.

If you are hunting for a glimmer of hope for the striped bass, the Virginia section of the Bay, who conducts a similar study, had an average hatch of 9.54 YOYs per seine haul this year.

That glimmer is just above their average. I’m assuming there is some sarcasm in that glimmer.

Average reproduction rates aren’t going to help this fishery.

Our last 10 years average out to pretty much our overall long term average and you see how much that is doing; steady decline. We are taking more than the fish can produce.

Calculators and rulers don’t lie. 😉

I doubt there will be a moratorium but I do expect the spring season will be shut down as a first measure next year. Then they'll go from there if things don't improve. We're lucky in the upper bay with a strong summer/fall season for right now .

We are taking more than the fish can produce. Here we can agree.

    But they are often miss-interpreted.

Shut down the trophy season, then 1 fish per day over 20 inches. Eliminate the C&R fishing. Let's start thinking about our kids and grand kids. Let's give them a chance to enjoy the great fishery the Chesapeake can be. I would be very happy putting a few perch in my freezer. Who knows maybe I'll give the snake heads
    a try.
