No they are residents from Jurassic period, more than 70 million years ago.

My dad caught a bowfin on a Devils Horse (non-existent lure up here at the time) in the early 70s bass fishing the upper Currituck with his bud. He kept it and brought it back just to show his boys this amazingly weird (for us) species. Bad ass fish.
