Bowfin, grinnell, cypress trout, mudfish, choupique, dogfish

Well let me tell you for a fish that is considered trash it is one of the most exciting species to fish for. They have many names and also Dinosaur DNA in them. The teeth are very sharp and the jaw has big muscles that can cut your finger off. They are not skittish like a snakehead and destroy lures. They will turn a spinnerbait into a pretzel. Cut a topwater popper in half. They are truly the king of the swamp.

On a moonlit night with an extreme high tide they leave the water to have sex with goats.

At least that what I was told down in Currytuck sound.

No they are residents from Jurassic period, more than 70 million years ago.

Good luck finding that place on a map.

My dad caught a bowfin on a Devils Horse (non-existent lure up here at the time) in the early 70s bass fishing the upper Currituck with his bud. He kept it and brought it back just to show his boys this amazingly weird (for us) species. Bad ass fish.
