Default Fishing report - Northern Neck - Mid bay

Took the boat out for a shake down ride. Tossed a couple of lines, looking for macs off the great wicomico and to the other side red and green channel markers. Fired up the downfire and sidescan sonar. The good stuff. It's a desert out there. We need to face facts. Omega, with it's spotter planes, nets and commercial boats, fishes this part of the bay like a lake. A lake that can't sustain this type of day-in, day-out net fishing. Between the pound nets, the gill nets and the Omega operations, there is not a fish left. It's a sick joke of a fishery. Any charter captain who is not sucking up to omega will tell you, head to Maryland waters, or to spots that omega can't fish. Yeah, Yeah, I get it - jobs. Just enjoy the water view, and water sports, sailing, etc. Fishing? - forget it. Go buy a house on the pax river if you want to fish. There are no fish in the middle VA bay, looking at a chart you would think it be the best!, but alas, it's depleted. Totally over fished. Good luck round the Rap sholes - the only place to get fish that omega can't reach.

Hi Georgia-bel. What can we do to fight the commercial invasion? Enough is enough. My family has enjoyed the Rappahannock for 4 generations now. I would like to see Virginian and Marylander families enjoy the Bay, et al, for many years to come. There is strength in numbers, and Goliath does not always win!!!

Here in MD we feel it everyday. When blues are reduced to 3 a day, weakfish - 1 a day at 13 inches, rockfish - 1 a day with a two-week closure planned, keeper croaker over 9 inches very hard to find, keeper flounder non-existent. The shortages are real while MD is complaining that the commercial guys need a longer fall gill net season to meet their rockfish quota...we are dying here! Something has to give. The statistics need to be fair and accurate and the Bay needs to rejuvenate without overharvesting. MD, Virginia and the Carolinas need to be in lockstep and not myopic/envious of what gets harvested in New England after fish leave our waters. We need to get this right for future generations and restore our fisheries to memory levels.
