I removed the vinyl decals from my painted aluminum boat. I now have the adhesive residue outline left. What can I use to remove this without removing the paint? Anyone know?
You might try some bug & tar remover used for cars. That stuff is pretty mild and is safe for paint. If that doesn't work, either acetone or Goof Off should do it.
I agree with Dale that acetone should take it off. You could test it in a small obscure area to see if it affects the paint. There is a product called Goo-Gone that we use in the kitchen for removing adhesive residue. You could try that too.
Be very careful using acetone. If the paint has any lacquer in its formulation the acetone will remove it. I'd stay with the Goo-Gone or WD-40 to be safe.
Silicon spray works for removing glue residue from stickers and shouldn't harm the paint. As already mentioned, it is always smart to test in a small obscure area no matter what you decide to use.
Everything listed above will definitely work, but I know Turtle wax makes an automotive sticker removal spray that I have used on several cars successfully.
3M adhesive remover at any Advanced or Auto Zone. Works great won't hurt the paint used it for 25 years removing my work van decals before I sold them. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes for easiest removal. Good luck.
