My son is taking his hunter safety course this year and is very pumped about the idea of hunting geese and possibly deer with me next year. He is not the biggest kid so I need to find him a gun with minimal recoil. I am thinking a used Remington 1100 youth 20 gauge.

I like the idea of the 1100 for reduced recoil plus they handle really well.

Does anyone have a used one out there from a kid who outgrew a youth model this year? As long as it is mechanically sound, I am not worried about scratches, etc.. Those thing happen when you use a gun.

Or any other suggested light recoil models?

Please PM if you have something you would like to sell.

Thanks

Hedda, my son is 10 and kinda on the small side as well. I goose hunt EVERYDAY possible and he is with me when not in school! Anyway, hunting partner let him use his daughter's Charles Daly 20ga. auto he caught on sale for like $300 man what a nice piece for a kid no kick or should I say NOT noticable when shooting at geese 10 yards overhead!!! He started with a youth 20 pump this year and seems to be doing great with it.

2nd the Charles Daly, my son is 7 and he is able to handle it real well. There is an unbelievable weight difference between the Daly and the 1100. The one thing you can count on is he will complain about carrying a gun and want to set it down, the lighter the better. You can get the black CD 20ga for around 3-350. I know about 5-6 people with kid's 7-12 and eryone of them went with the CD.

I just left a gun show were someone tried to sell me a C/D camo for $519! Versus $350 for the black one. No brainer there! So they have light / gas operated recoil?

VA - Is the 1187 a youth model?

I haven't shot the CD, but can attest to the 1100 youth model being a great gun for smaller hunters. I have one that my wife shoots and eventually hope my 2 daughters to shoot once they get old enough. That gun has a vent rib w/ 2 beads, one front and one middle -- and very fun for shooting clays. Semi auto makes it nice too, along w/ shorter stock.

I know two kids that both shoot the Charles Daly camo version. Both seem to like them which any kid would as long Dad would buy who care which one. I know the Dad of one of these kids got a 12 gauge same version and it would not cycle proper because of the stamped parts in it and had a smith fix it and when picking it up the smith had some real eye openers to relay on to him about the CD's and now he wantes to sell his.

Hedda,

Now that Va. mentioned it when my son borrowed the CD /Black when shooting 3in. on an extremely cold like teens morning it wouldn't eject the empties and the owner said it had been cleaned after the last use? Not sure if oil he used was jelling slowing the action or if that's what it normally does with 3in. shells.

Talked it over with a few other people. I am going to continue to the hunt for an 1100 Youth. I shot a 12 1100 for years. Keep it clean and it will not let let you down.

If anyone comes across one, please let me know.

Thanks!

JUst bought my 9 yr old a Franchi 720 short from Winks in princessann. Awesome gun, ANd is the lightest of all the semi's. My son is 9 and not a very big nine so weight was important. Last day of duck season it did fine duck hunting. This past weekend he carried it for most of the day rabbit hunting. 1100 are nice but heavy as lead. And the price wasn't treble either.
