I'm about to purchase a boat with this motor, the owner tells me he flushes the motor with the hose attachement while the motor is running. It has 500 hours and he claims he has always flushed it this way,i'm concerned that the water pump isin't getting enough water to it and could be damaged.I was on the boat and it seemed to run fine but this bothers me,should i be concerned?

Echo that...you need to replace it anyway...when buying a boat don't always trust what you are told...I would replace the impeller and water pump anyway, it is cheap if you get a shop to do it, cheaper if you do it yourself (I just did mine on the same engine), but it will save you some heartache later on..
PS I thought you bought a boat a while go, did it not go through?

Very low hours for an 03. I have 1400 on an 04 and so far so good. If you like the boat, I would buy it and put a water pump on the motor. In the grand scheme of things, a water pump is a very small part of owning a boat.

If he used the hose fitting on the motor and ran the motor, he did in incorrectly. A Yammy dealer can hook the motor up to a computer and confirm the hours and tell you if there are any codes that signify trouble. A compression check is also a fair indicator as to the health of the engine. Since he does not know how to flush his engine properly, I would want some proof that the oil was changed in no more than 100 hour intervals. It is not unusual for the computer to show less hours than the gage on the console.

don't do that,,, I have a 2006 150 4stk , I had some issues early on and the Outstanding support from Yamaha and ( Rick Smith) rep
led me to some questions and this was one of them... He said this was the biggest misunderstanding about these motors.. That flush is a quick flush to help get salt out of the hoses and fresh water in ... However to properly flush the motor you need the rabbit ears in the larger rating..

You will eventually cause damage to the motor as Rick said it has been the biggest issue with folks not realizing what they are actually doing..

I believe that originally Yami did intend this attachment for flushing with the motor running but since then has changed their tune. It could be that motor was originally intended to be flushed in that manner but I wouldn't do it.

I agree the water pump is not a major issue,my concern is has he done damage to the power head from over heating over and over again. The motor ran great when i was on the boat but bigger problems could be looming .It's a shame because i really liked the boat and outboard but i'm not looking to get into major problems with an outboard with no warranty.

i have 04 motors with 1700 hours on it, no you don't flush it that way,but you will need to replace them anyway.see what the pressure guages read on the dash. when it the low you will know its soon to replace.

Yes, that would be the bigger concern. If the motor would overheat a loud alarm comes on. I feel fairly certain he would have heard it and stopped doing what he was doing. I have had the alarm come on even with the flusher attachment fixed to the lower unit intake. A garden hose barely supplies enough volume of water to satisfy the F225. It does take a while for the motor to heat up and for the alarm to go on. It would not be good to have that be the standard practice. It only happened one time with my F225. I bought better ear muffs and watch it closely when I use them.

I have had the alarm go off when fishing the flats in weed beds several times. Again the motor is shut down and the intake is cleared. The alarm is designed to go off before things get hot enough to do any damage. It would be totally useless if it did not.

I would have the motor checked out by a certified Yamaha mechanic and if it passed muster go for it. 500 hours is very low for a 2003 engine.
