No it is not. There is a catch and release season that is open. It is closed in April. Get a reg book a map and a calendar. There are also closures where you cannot fish for striped bass while they are on their spawning grounds as of March 1. No other fish in the bay has such restrictions. Shad, which are a "threatened" species are legal to be fished right where they spawn for example. Go throw stones at the shad fisherman, perch fisherman, bass fisherman etc who fish for fish while they are actually spawning.

I have a friend who worked at Horn Point back when biologists netted stripers, took them to the lab, collected and fertilized the eggs, and then released the fingerlings. This was back in the 80's.He told me the biologists handled these fish very carefully. Most of the large fish aborted their eggs before they were fully ready to become fertilized.Sure the fish might have survived but not the eggs.Luckily in the 80's,when the ban came in effect, there were other fish to catch.Trout, blues, flounder, croaker, macks, and others.I remember the ban quite well.If the ban comes again what is left to catch.Nothing.Maybe a biologist could join this conversation.Just because it's legal does not make it right.Marijuana is legal but you want your kids getting high.

Recreationally, there's a big difference in how each individual handles fish too.
Trolling?
Dragging them a mile?
Light tackle, fighting them for 30 minutes, to exhaustion?

Then letting them beat themselves on the deck for 5 minutes while you dig out your phone for your hero pics?

Then jamming your hands in their gills to hold them up for pics?

Yeah, you " released" it alright!

Looks to me like OP is doing it right, as far as minimizing stress.

You want to complain about rockfish, well, leave em alone.
You know Tail I respect the folks on here that want to keep politics off the board. It seems silly to me that they now . insist that you can't voice your oppossing opinion even when it relates to fishing. I am no scientist but it seems to me that stressing out a fish on light tackle has some detrimental effect. I am with you. Leave them the hell alone during spawning season.

Guys if you want to debate this, start a new thread. Don't drag it out on here. I have said my piece.
So YOU have said your piece, but no one else should, Got it!

I think the whole "debate" is actually about certain people complaining and then blaming all of the problems with the fishery on someone else, but then going out and hurting the fishery themselves, but pretending what they do does not. Both are engaged in legal fishing activities.

yes im not going to further debate this on a fishing report thread, im done on this one. the respectful thing to do is to make a new thread if you want to discuss further. this is/was a place that greg was sharing fishing reports. some chose to derail it.

Great Job guys! You and the other self righteous keyboard warriors are the reason Tidalfish has been dead for so long. Just when it looked like there was a breath of hope for the forum a few armchair biologists and misguided moral police hall monitors crawl out and whine about a man successfully catching fish on a regular basis (the horror!) and then actually sharing the information. If you want to constructively debate a topic that you are obviously so passionate about I would challenge you to put on your big boy pants and start your own new thread on that topic. That way you can climb up on your bully pulpit and preach your opinion to all those who wish to participate. Next time, please remember your manners from second grade and try not to derail another man's fishing reports by sniping from the sidelines.

Fantastic. I just find it ironic that you do something (voice your contrary opinion to another poster) and then tell others not to do that same.
