it is missing a one blade is it possible it is in the powerhead somewhere?? what is the best way to find out besides taking it apart.

It is possible but do not be concerned about it unless you have other pumping/ overheating problems,,just replace the impeller/water pump. and run it. as long as everything runs OK forget about it..
the balde may have disintegrated/ or left through the exhaust

Replace the impellor and if doesn't overheat leave it alone. You don't want to be taking apart a 1972 outboard if you don't have to.

Depends on where the blade landed. By the way, how do you know you're missing a blade?

If it is so worn that one blade is missing the water pump/impeller is bad,,replace it and try it,,if it pumps and cools, forget it,,however with a motor that age,, you may have other problems
