I wouldn't use the word buy. I think technically they can only be transferred over and I don't think money can take place. Technically. What happens is you buy the "commercial fishing buisness" and the license comes with it. Sometimes, the buisness can mean the boat and equipment as well.

A TFL can have several allocations. It can have the rockfish permit which allows you to hook and line. It can have a pot permit, it can have an oyster permit, etc etc etc so the ones with more allocations generally cost more.

Expect to spend somewhere in the realm of 5 grand for just a guides lincense. As the allocations increase so does the price. For a TFL with a rockfish and crab allocation, you're looking at somewhere around 10,000.

Not sure if you're looking to just run guide trips or hook and line, but, trust me, you need a lot of free time and be able to catch a lot of fish to make hook and lining worth the price of your trip.

The price of a TFL can vary depending on type. A LCC tfl business can be bought for as little as $2000.

You can also buy an Unlimited TFL business which has a larger value.

I think the words "Tidal Fish License" are on all commercial licenses. There are numerous kinds.

Heimdall, you are almost right... an LCC is not a TFL. TFL's give you the ability to catch finfish, and you can get endorsements for crabs, oysters, rockfish, etc.

An LCC is only good for crabs using trotlines and/or a small number of crab pots.

FALSE INFORMATION!

In order to have an LCC "Endorsement" you first need a TFL (Tidal Fish License)
You can have a TFL with an LCC and Finfish "Endorsements"

It sounds like when you use the term "TFL" you are actually referring to an "Unlimited TFL"

Yeah. That is my understanding as well. A TFL, or "tidal fish license," is essentially only what the card is called. You put endorsements on the TFL. This is what actually allows you to harvest your catch.

The card could say something like

"Tidal Fish License"
-rockfish H&L
-resident guide
-crab, 600pots

Or it could say

"Tidal Fish License"
-resident guide

The first license depicts that the permit holder has the rock fish license, as well as a residents guides endorsement and 600 crab pots.

The second only depicts that it is a guides license.

The more endorsements the more valuable of a license. An unlimited TFL essentially allows you to do whatever you want. It includes every endorsement.

In order for you to make money harvesting the bay, you either have to go all for it and only only do it, or just not worry about it. At one time I held an unlimited TFL, and then also a TFL with just a rockfish H&L permit. Neither made money in the end. I gave up both.

The amount of time in preparation, time on the phone finding a place to buy, time checking in the catch at sketchy locations, and amount of energy keeping you catch perfect, and possibly filleting your catch for restaurants equates to about 2.00/hr. And that's if you're really good.

Just goes to show how when DNR prints their "abridged version" things get confusing. Their column titled - "Commercial License Catagories" are actually the "Endorsements" that are put on the Tidal Fish License. You could have 1 or multiples.
Is a TFL it's own entity? In other words do you pay X dollars for a TFL and then have to add the endorsements? Or is an LCC license just considered to be a TFL?
