...passing through the fleet yesterday?

Could they have not gone further out the channel and made it to deep water?

I found it personaly offensive to be threatened, as an American citizen, with "...deadly force...". They drove that sub (I belive intentionally) through the fleet, as a training excercise for the CG.

I had a ridged hull bear down on me at wide open throttle and nearly ran through my spread, and a cutter threaten to open fire! We were clearly more than 500 yards off.

Geeeezzz...we only have three miles. They have the entire freekin' ocean!!!!!!!!!!!

Son, we live in a world that has oceans and those oceans need to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Vidego? We have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for rockfish and curse the Navy and USCG; you have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what we know: that the 3 mile line, while tragic, probably saved fish and that our existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves fish. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties you want us on the water, you need us on that ocean. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to defend something. You use them as a punchline. We have neither the time nor the inclination to explain ourselves to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom we provide and then questions the manner in which we provide it. We would rather you just said "thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, we suggest that you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, we don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Uhhh....what?

Excuse me Sir. I served my time and I'm damn proud of it. It just never came up on my watch to threaten citizens of our country.

Climb down off your high horse and hear what I'm saying.

MIke,
Great movie....I love that scene too. Oh and if the Coasties need to train at the expense of a stretch 25 or two, I say have at it. I can buy a new lure now and again while I enjoy the freedom and the privledge to take my boat out there from time to time.

Yup. It was a good script.

But, y'all aren't getting it. Where you there? Did you see it as I did? Or are you just venting? Kinda like what I'm doing?

Vidego,
If you are ignorant enough to believe that the Navy and Coast Guard would hazard a billion dollar submarine and the CG ships and boats intentionally then maybe you should have stayed in whatever service you claim to have served to smarten you up. Having had to make the transit from here and more then a few other harbors and ports as a OOD, I can clearly state that I never heard any Captain of mine say lets go through the center of all these small boats just for training.
Maybe you should check your chart to see if you were in a shipping lane, by the way that means the ships have right of way.

Fishdad's response was as emotional as mine was until I realized that most folks just don't know how good we got it here in this great country, and it was a very good movie script!!!! Ya got to love ole Jack!

Vidego, I bet you will burn a flag tomorrow because they messed up your spread? Fishing is a privledge, a luxury and fun. Defending our country is blood , sweat, and tears hard work with little compensation except knowing the fact that what they do preserves our luxuries and freedom in this country. Moving your boat out of the way for 5 minutes to respect our military is not alot to ask for is it? Martin

I spent 28 years in the Navy, with a great deal of it away from my family and friends.

I am now privileged to own a boat, and spend time with my family, and friends, enjoying the water and fishing.

I was just as offended by the OP as Mike was.

And no, I didn't need to be there, Vidego.

Well IWF...thanks for being more rational. I do know how good we have it and feel I did my share (and someone elses) to get it where it is today.

Instead of trying to belittle me, do you understand the intent of my post?

Do you honestly think they would use a submarine for training the CG in how to provide security during transit? Where did you get the idea it was training? That had to be the real deal of a sub leaving or returning to port... They almost always use the Thimble Shoals channel for transit.

Pull your lines and move well out of the way...they ain't playing...and they're not disrespecting your patriotism. Next time run real fast towards the sub while waving the American Flag - they'll know you're a true patriot and leave you alone...or at least pick up the pieces and investigate...

Vidego, I am retire Navy, was a submarine officer and spent over a year as the manuevering watch officer of the deck, which means I drove the sub in and out of ports during that time. I was stationed in Norfolk. Subs that transit in and out of here almost always take the same course. If you ever watch them, you could chart it as they generally do not deviate from this transit lane. They drawn significant draft and are not highly manueverable on the surface.

In other words, if you see a sub transiting the area, you will need to get out of its way. If you look at a chart of this area, you will see why it takes the course it does.
