Tfer's,

After much disscusion on leaders, I have a question of my own.... My current set up is a 1/0 coastlock tied to the main line with 8' of 80lb leader with 1/0 coastlock at each end.

Now for the question... To eliminate some tackle, could I use a back to back uni knot attaching 8' 60lb leader directly to the main line ( 40lb mono )and only have one coastlock to attach to lure of choice....Tandem rig, brellas etc......

FWIW: I use Sampo ball bearing 150 lb tournament snap swivels at the end of my fishing line.

For singles - I tie on 6-8 feet of 60 lb leader.I use a loop at the snap and an improved clinch at the lure.

For tandems - I use a 3/0 three way and snap it directly to the snap swivel. My leaders are tied to the three way.

I like a Sampo BB swivel in case I snag a baitfish or get a "spinner" or stick/debri.

I do not like to use a snap swivel at the lure - other then umbrella rigs.

well i will give you my take on that i tend to tie the bait directly to the leader line then split my leader with a barell swivel to eliminate twist when bringing in a fish. Then i only have one snap swivel at the weight. but if i were tying the line together to elimate tackle and weights thats the knot for ya! but keep in mind you want some kind of barrel in there for spin. i just dont like the tackle right next to the bait. good luck

To answer your question Shawn, yes you can.
In fact it's my preferance. Less hardware.
I run 30 lb. main line and 50 lb. leader connected with uni to uni.
It's, in essence a "wind on leader".

Ditto to this. I use this method and it works like a charm as long as the knot fits through the level winder. 30 to 50 works great for me!

Yes,
Uni is great for tieing to leader as long as the leader is not more than double the main line # rating.
thats how we did it in the old days, before wind on swivels.

today I don't use much wind leaders,
but for Piers, a couple of cranks on the spool and you can keep those big boys out of the pilings.
I guess if your running 30lb. it's still a good idea for leadering at the boat.

Shawn; I always have a heavy sampo swivel at the end of my line. Each parachute is tied directly to the leader, however, the other end of the leader (6' for heavy lures- 12' for light lures) has a 150 or 200 pound barrel swivel attached. This way, I can make any single running lure into a tandum just by attaching a heavy lure to the sampo swivel. Each lure is stored on a leaderwheel so I can quickly adjust the weights (or colors) of my singles or tandums quickly and easily. It has worked for me so well this year, I plan to stick with it again this spring. 5th (Marty)

Connecting lighter mono to heavier mono

I do this quite a bit for my surf fishing shock leaders -- Scaled down a little bit but the same would work here:

You could join the two dissimilar diameter lines with an albright knot (very easy to tie and knots up fairly small)

You could also use a spider hitch to bristol / no name connection. (even easier to tie)

I prefer the albright because it results in one knot instead of two.

I find that less hardware is better. However, like others said, since you're trolling (and not surf fishing like me) you may still want to have a swivel somewhere in the mix...just to prevent twist.

Tight Lines,
Mark

Learned so much by reading all of the real angler's notes. I have one question for Skip. Does it have any advantage using a loop at a snap vs. another improved clinch?
Thanks,

Trooper

Certainly a back to back uni will work but another option is to put a SPRO 135lb power swivel inline. These r extremely small and will allow u to wind on the leader and will help alleviate twist. Just about everyone I know uses this setup offshore. They wind on just fine through turbo or roller guides (unless they r the small 1's). They will not go through a levelwind though. I like a short piece of mono, say 6', tied this way on my braid rods so u don't have to handle the braid at all boat side.

I run #65 and #80 braid as main line then tie 15 feet of #80 mono leader directly to the braid using a Slim Beauty. The beauty of the Beauty is that the braided line is doubled which reduces the likely hood of the braid cutting the mono on such mismatched diameters. The Beauty is also smaller and stronger. The Beauty will test close to 100% when tied properly. The double uni on the other hand will test closer to 70% on a braid to mono termination.

Termination wise I just use a good quality ball bearing swivel on the end of the leader. Makes connection to any combination of terminal hardware a "snap". :D

Good choice . I was shown that knot a few years ago for attaching shock leader for surf fishing . Here is a video that shows it being tied for connecting tippet but it's the same knot , tied the same way : How to tie the slim beauty knot for fly fishing | Wonder How To

Tropperlxz - using a loop at the snap makes it easy to undo a crossed/tangled line.I can unsnap the loop and undo the mess-then just snap it back on.

It also seems to help keep the swivel from cocking/jamming over on itself.
Some guys tie a loop at the lure but I like a tight knot there.
