Since we had not gone out for a fishing trip since Christmas, I wanted to make sure the odds were at least in our favor wind wise, so we decided to go out today. The kids were off of school and a west wind was predicted. We woke up late and did not get out on the water until 11:30am or so. We decided to head on over to the fisherman's island area at first and float some eels.. The ride there was awesome and as smooth as glass. We were there around an hour and a half, and not takers.. So we headed over tot he 4A buoy for about 45 minutes we had pings but no fish so then headed over to Cape Henry area........and boy am I glad we did!
When we approached the area things were already looking better.. We spotted birds and boats in no time... We approached the CH bouy area and it was now around 2:30pm.. Now we had a couple of pings. We repositioned the line and started to set up. We had just got all the lines out and Kevin yelled..." pull um!!" .. .. A bee hive was forming about a mile away.. Now we're talking I said.. lines up and off we went to the outskirt of the hive so we would not scatter the action. We hadn't even come to a stop yet and I had a my pole in hand ready to release a megabite (stretch) 30 (purple with black lines)... We stopped, I released it, and started to put the second line out and I looked up the first one was a knockin' so I told Kevin get the first fish..I quickly pulled in my line I had started to let out and then ran over to steer the boat.. Kevin pulled the fish into the boat in not time flat.. A 39 3/4 incher for the box.. Not bad, not bad at all!! We then circled around and got the 4 lines in.. My stretch went off again. This time I grabbed it and began to try to pull it in but the fish was just depleting the line so fast that I knew I needed to add some tension and quick..He had a nice size to him so I carefully increased the tension . Good he was still there and then 10 seconds later .....GONE .. Yes folks.. "classic" just lost that one... The phone started to ring and it was my friend, Butch..I talked with him for about a minute and then I told him we were in a bee hive and I would need to call him back.. Seconds after I got off the phone my line went screaming I had a fish on the purple with black stretch line again , I got it 1/2 to the boat and then another line went off so Kevin grabbed it then another went off .. and Katie stepped in... 3 lines going at the same time..and Clara was sleeping! Now we had to hussle. I started to bring mine in and got him on the boat a FATTIE and 43 1/4 inches long. Kevin still fighting with his so I went over and steered the boat and then I went to help Katie who now was very close to having the fish to the boat...And then IT happened..the fish had swam toward swim step and the engine..& of course it was the $45 red and white mojo line... I turned the engine off and slowly lifted the engine but the fish was now darting the opposite way well under the boat and had quite the advantage. Katie even tried repositioning herself on the boat. Kevin's fish got off his line and he came over quickly to assist... He grabbed her pole as she asked him for help and about 20 seconds later her line snapped and no fish... .. We tried to cheer Katie up. We then turned the boat around .. I threw my line out again and 5 minutes later.. Katie screams "Fish On!".. Go for it Katie!!.. I looked up and another line was going off so I grabbed this one. This was another mojo line so I grabbed it.. and Katie was working on the "stretch" 30 line ... My chartreuse mojo line with chartreuse tomic produced a heavy 27 incher but back it went. Rules are Rules. We cheered for Katie to land her fish but.. no dice.... the fish got off .... We gave Katie and pep talk as we feared she would be really down about it.. but she was actually tired, cold, and more concerned about what was for dinner.. She said she wanted to go back home..... so that's exactly what we did..Even though I would have loved to stick around cause the bite was hot. Katie's request probably did us a favor because the wind really started picking up in the last hour . If you look closely in the first picture you can see the wind was blowing so hard that my hair is half way across my face..
