On 1/31/07, the US Fish and Wildlife Service conducted a public input meeting regarding night surf fishing at Back Bay NWR. The following is a brief summary of their proposal:

1. Night surf fishing would be allowed from 10/1 to 10/31, excluding seven scheduled feral hog/deer hunt dates.

2. Fishing will be allowed in a designated zone of 1/3 of a mile between the Seaside Trail and the Dune Trail boardwalks.

3. All fishing needs to cease at 12:00 midnight and all fishermen/women need to be on the refuge before the automatic gate closes at dusk (approx. 6:00 pm in October)

4. All fishermen/women would need to obtain a special use permit in order to fish (they proposed a $35 fee).

5. No one under the age of 16 is allowed to obtain a permit and dogs are not allowed on the refuge.

Now this is only what the FWS is proposing. They asked several times at the meeting to please send them our comments. You can do so by sending an email to [email protected] by March 2, 2007.
