the main thing is just to stay out of the way(out of the channel) when you see one coming.
keep in mind also, there is a huge blind spot, about 250 ft in front of the empty barges, if you cant see the pilothouse, the pilot cant see you
please dont shine a spot light into the pilot house, 1 we are blinded, secondly, we have right of way, lastly, at 300ft. PLUS it takes a long time to stop, turn or do much of anything that isnt already planned. these problems are compounded when we are loaded, 5000 tons of rock take a while to stop from a whopping 5 knots, try about 9 mins, backing full astern!
at night, we run a yellow flashing light, on the center line of the barge, as well as red and green in the usuall places.
we normally put out a security call at major turns....brandon point, fort powatan, approach to ben harrison, city point, turkey isl. cut, jones neck cut, approach to chesterfield pwr plant., jimmy deans, kingsland reach, deepwater termianal.
i run the MISS GILL, and we frequent the james, normally atleast once a week. feel free to say hello on CH. 13.
