Under similar circumstances, I have gone the 'opposite' way, and had some luck - i.e. try a small pig/jig, 1/4 oz. (smallmouth size) or a small popper (i.e. Pop-R) - sometimes if you are fishing 'behind' someone else, something 'different' will work - don't get me wrong, his method may be the best, but you may have to mix it up a bit.
