Planer Board Line
I store my planer line on two old 209's attached to short rod handle. An electrical cord reel also works.
- Figure out how long you want to run the boards, cut the line to length
- Tie off one end with triple surgeons knot ( this attaches to cleat).
- Loop to the forward stanchion then secure to the bow cleat.
- Attach the line with a twice through Palomar knot to 200lb Sampo Coastlock
- Coastlock attachs to the boards eye.
Simple as it sounds, you'll have no problems with this set up.
You'll get enough clearance to get the clips back to the position you want. I keep the line from the rod tip to the carabiner clip tight. I believe this assists in keeping the planer line out of the water. I use #64 rubber bands which don't break easily.
Does this answer your question?
Thought of that , but I'm not sure I want to start drilling holes if I can rig it to work the other way . I do so little trolling that I'd rather not go that way . After some thought , I think I've got it pretty much figured out but any other ideas will still be appreciated .Mike, looking at your boat pic, I would probally install a straight up and down rod holders on each side of the gunnel about 3-4' back from the bow..........Then make pipes that fit snugly in those rod holders with 2 eyebolts at the top.......one facing forward and one out to the side...........Then tie off those pipes from the eye facing forward to the bow cleats.
I will send you a PM with pic request out of curiosity sake . I don't think I'm going to invest the time and money to go that route though . I have no anchor locker in the deck and being such a small boat , I'd like to keep as much space open as possible . Oh , and save that garlic for your meals ! Bwaahaa!LOLMy buddy and I had the same problem. We came up with a unique solution. We put a 2x8 bolted across the the bow rails. Then we ran a 6 foot pipe through a hole drilled in the middle of the board. On the bottom of the pipe we screwed it into a flange bolted on a spare piece of 2x8 cut to fit in the anchor well. Finally, we used a ratchet strap to tighten it to the front center cleat. Very solid and gets the planer line way higher over the rail. I just called my buddy to try and post the pics. He's not home. Also the pics show me wearing some very fruity crocs;-) but I got a beautiful striper on opening day too. Yes, I am also the one that puts garlic salt on my croaker bait, but I got pics of lots of croaker too. (Took your advice and used monster squid) mark. PM me a normal e-mail if you want and I can forward the pics and then you post them if you want. Can't figure it out myself.
Thanks . I don't troll a whole lot in my boat as I can usually ctach plenty of big rock in the shallows on bait in the spring , but I'd really like to have the ability to run the boards if I so desire , especially in the fall and early winter .Yes, based on what you described you wanted, that is how I'd do it.
I've tried looping the line around the bow rail/stantion and just running the line from the cleat without worrying about getting the line as high as possible.
I don't think it makes much difference.
Thanks Francis . I really don't want to get into too much boat alteration . I'm thinking that my bow rails are pretty darn high off the water considering the boat is only 17' and the lines shouldn't drag too badly .Mike,
Before you try anything go trolling with me in March. I go fishing 5 our of 7 days a week in March and April. It should give you some great ideas. If it were me I would tie your planer board line off the cleats, and then just run the planer board line over the rail. . . You will be fine.
