I know this belongs on the freshwater board, however I know this board gets alot more traffic. I am trying to put together a catfishing trip on the James for tomorrow. I know most of the post are from all the way up around dutch gap, question is are there also good numbers of fish being caught lower on the James than that? Maybe around Jordan Point or as far down as Claremont? If so around Claremont, is the ramp there still public? Will post a report with pics after the trip.

Thanks

John

The Claremont ramp is private now and not open to the public. Was a shallow ramp anyways.

If you're on the Williamsburg side of the river, the ramp at Morris Creek or the campground have good access to the lower james.

Or Gray's Creek in Surry.

I launched at Lawnes Creek ramp on Hog Island Saturday. The ramp is in poor shape and its pretty shallow running out but managed with a 19 foot deep v. Fish the power plant discharge on the opposite site of the island (west/north), about a 15 minute run. Everyone was loading up. You can also run to Chipokes Creek.

chumming works well for the smaller ones but I've always felt that the bigger ones are not scavengers and thus is not an effective method for catching them. It just depends on what size you are after.
