I had plans to go to Tri-State on saturday, and i really wanted to go. The weather was just shaping up too perfectly for small boat fishing at the CBBT. Mid 50's in February with a light southwest and waves 1 foot..........i absolutely had to go.
I made my way to the shore on Friday evening. Stayed over with the parents and dad and I got up saturday and headed south. We never planned to get out early, so we took our time and were putting the boat in around 8:30am, only 2 other trailers in the lot and i knew who one of them was.
We made our way out the bridge and started at the shoal. I was working the pilings in search mode. We never found anything interesting so we continued on. Got close to the 4th and found some ineresting marks with no takers. WOW, it's 9:30 am and we have not caught a fish yet. We check all the corners around the 4th, NADA. Headed across the tube, NADA.......corners on the 3rd, NADA. It's 10am now and still no fish. We worked our way through the pilings between the 3rd and 2nd and still, NADA.
We got our first bit around 10:30 am, only it wasn't a rockfish. This was the most elusive of all commies.............it was CALPN TRAYT himself. I talked to Butch the day before and knew he'd be there, just a matter of time before we bumped into each other.
Here is the man himself.........hard at work. It's hard to tell, but his buddy AL is up there in the bow just jigging away.
We chatted for a while and they had been out since O dark thirty with only 2 fish to show for it....wasn't looking good at this point.
We made our way back towards the 3rd and found the ONLY game in town. Seriously, the only thing we found was dinks on some random pilings between the 2nd and 3rd.
Here is dad with a CBBT dink. Most fish were in the 20" range
We found them around 11:30 am and we left them biting around 4pm. We just made the same drift over and over. I caught the biggest of the day @ 29"
We sifted through alot of combinations before finding just about the only lure they would bite. You needed a 1 - 2oz head with a purple glitter 10" BKD. No kidding, they would not hit a chartreuse glitter!!
The best water temp we found all day was 38.2 degrees. We totalled the day with between 40 - 50 fish, biggest being 29". The weather was absolutely ridiculous. The outgoing was ripping and the waves were flat calm. The wind was kicking up a little and we called it quits around 4pm. 50 fish and 50 degrees in February is not such a bad thing. I expected alot more out of the trip. Overall a great day to be on the water and we caught some fish and were in great company (AL, not Butch).
I hope you guys were having fun at Tri-State while i was out fishing.
