After several cancelled trips I made it out to the CBBT with SEVERAL HUNDRED other boats yesterday leaving from Lynnhaven. Flat calm all day, warm, one hhuge fog bank at midday last lasted for several hours, and gentleman, she was thick!
My crew consisted of Phil Angle (Angle) and Barry Aron of LaPlata. Barry was gravely ill with the worst case of sea-sickness I have ever seen. Poor guy.
The bite today was a piling bite, I could not get anything going at the tube or islands. The fish were concentrated on deep pilings so it required the ability to feel a hit down deep. This was hard for new timer Barry and he struggled catching only 6-10 fish all day. LTJ is a hard thing to teach especially when it involves proper placement of casts, ripping tide and barnacle covered pilings! But we were able to pop his CBBT cherry and I am sure he is sold.
In any event, we put 76 fish on the meter, most were 22"-26" and not one bigger. But they were fun , fat as footballs, covered in sea lice. No birds for us but Francis found birds on Nine Foot Shoal in the afternoon, he called but my cell phone was dead...
The deep pilings by the 4th held fish but the Curve at the Third was kind in the afternoon with a better grade of football.
Best lure was a 1 1/2 oz jig head, 7" BA Opening Night. Lots of fish stuck the lure on the way back to the boat as they were suspended at the 20' range.
I saw Francis, Kevin and father Bill who racked up about 125 fish. They caught one over 26" and that was Bill's lone 34" fish. Saw lots of other TidalFishers with bent rods.
The trollers had a tough day at Cape Henry, heard lots of whining on the radio and back at the ramp.
Lynnhaven was a zoo in the evening with all the boats. In the end, a good time was had by all. GO GET 'EM!
