I got an invite to fish with Andy (drewzim) on his 20 foot seacraft this weekend. Paul (skipperwork) posted that he wanted to HO, so he joined us as well and so did Andy's brother Dave.
We planned to leave on saturday morning to catch the afternoon bite, then stay over and fish again sunday. We all met up at 8am saturday morning, loaded our gear and headed south. We had to make a few critical stops along the way and we finally got the ramp around 1:30 ish. When we got past the ships, it was just plain ROUGH. I swear i think we broke through some 3 foot waves.......i should know, i was sitting in the bow taking every wave in the face.
The sun was fading fast, so we stayed close to the 4th and worked the pilings catching loads of fish. Saturday was just a "scouting" trip so we were just trying to get dialed in. I don't even remember how many or what our biggest fish was on saturday, but i do know we caught alot of fish and a few nice ones.
We ran into Shawn K and Bill at the ramp, chatted and had a beer. Along came Hillbilly Boater with his crew. Our plan was to go to Kelly's for dinner. This is where the story takes a wrong turn..............4 young guys in a pub on a saturday night :helpsmilie:
After about 10 beers each, a couple (more like 4) Irish car bombs, and $200 later (just the bar bill, our food bill was over $100 too), we were headed back to Kiptopeke at like 11:30, eager to hear that alarm at 6am. It was tough to get up, but we took it like men and headed to stingrays for some hangover comfort food. About 7:30 am we were launching and headed to the bridge to start the day. We started around the pilings on the shoal working our way towards the 4th. We picked out a few fish and then the bird show started. There were working birds pretty much all morning. The fish were moving around alot so it was tough to stay on them.
Here they are showing us the way!!
We played around with them for a couple of hours and headed back into the pilings. It wasn't long and Paul hooked up a biggun. Shortly after, he boated our biggest fish of the day.

We moved over to the 3rd and there wasn't a whole going on over there just before lunch time. The afternoon gave us a nice incoming tide and we eventually found ourselves at the pilings close to the 2nd. The short of it is..........the afternoon bite was AMAZING.
Most of our afternoon fish were slots. We were getting the occasional 34 - 35 inch fish too. Alot of our drifts, all 4 of us were hooked up. We could each get in 3 - 4 fish before drifting out of the pilings.
Here is Dave with a nice one
Andy with a nice one
We all 4 boated a fish and wanted to get a picture, but there was no one to hold the camera. Oh well, here i am with Dave.
The sun started to fade fast and something magical happened. The current was dying and the fish moved really tight to the pilings. Once we got them dialed in it got crazy and we had a great sunset bite with big fish.
These are the fish we were catching right at sunset.
It was getting dark and we had a long ride home. We cruised in with calm seas. Back at the ramp we were loaded up and headed up the road by 6pm. We did not count fish today, but our count was easily over 300 fish. Alot of the time we were catching 3 - 4 fish each on each drift and there were 4 of us on the boat. That sunset bite made the whole day worth while. I'd say 30% of our fish were slot fish. This was my 3rd or 4th trip down this season and by far the best. I slept good last night and got up this morning still thinking about yesterday's trip. Many thanks to our captain and mate Andy/Dave, i hope we can do it again soon.
If you read this and you know Hillbilly Boater, Jim Hensley, or Echo........give em a call and ask them about the 4 hot chicks buying them shots at Kelly's. Man i hope their wives don't find out!!
