It seemed like all the great ones were going to be there. Shawn Kimbro, Jamie, Wild Bill, Giant Tuna, Uncle Phill............i figured i might as well join in. I made a last minute decision to make a semi-suicide run. My parents live outside salisbury, so i headed down tuesday night for a good nights sleep, dreaming of a biggun' on wednesday morning.
We left the barn around 5:15 and headed into some patchy fog and pouring rain. It rained pretty much the entire trip down there. Not excited about the rain, we took our time, stopped and had breakfast, and finally got on the water around 7:45 am. The rain stopped as we pulled into the ramp, and it never rained again. We headed for 9 foot shoal to check it out just in case. Not much going on so off to the 4th. I got a message that there was a good bite around the 4th, but by the time we got there it was pretty crowded.
We did our own thing and worked the pilings around the 4th and we had a steady pick at them. It wasn't on fire, but there wasn't much time between hookups. By around 10:30 am, the piling bite had died off around the 4th. Most of the fish we caught were slots.
Here is my dad with a CBBT fattie
We went on the search and found ourselves at the pilings between the 2nd and 3rd. I knew we were in the right place, when we ended up running into this crew :
Shawn K and Crew
We picked at them again still catching plenty of slots
We drifted off the bridge and took a break for lunch. We had to re-tie some break offs and get ready for the afternoon bite. We headed back to the pilings around the 3rd, but the fish were getting smaller by the minute. There wasn't a whole lot going on so we headed back across the the 4th. Nothing going on at the islands so we jumped right back in on the pilings. We found a really nice grade of fish and caught mostly 28 - 32" fish in the afternoon.
Dad again
Time was running short and i couldn't let the old man get the best of me. I wrote "kill" on my BA and came up with a couple of back to back fatties.
We pulled the plug around 3:30 preparing for a long ride home. Our total for the day was between 50 - 60 fish. We could have caught ALOT more, but i was having alot of problems fishing and handling the boat in the ripping current. Fishing around the 3rd before lunch, i was only driving and letting dad fish off the bow because the current was too much.
We will be back down next weekend if the weather is good. Hope to find some bigger fish, but im happy picking out all the 28 - 32's i can.
