I like Deep Dropping and typically use an my small Avit or Trinadad 30 on a boat rod. The Avit and Trinidad have a fast retreive rate, which comes in handy for DD'ing in really deep water. But last time out we weren't that deep so I used a Calcutta 401 on one of those BPS Freestyle jigging rods, which is a lot lighter set up. Worked great with 6-9 ounce diamond jigs and I liked it. 2 or 3 guys to my left was someone using a sipn reel and doing strangely well. We compared notes on the way back and he had a 40 size Shamino spin reel with 30# braid on a BPS freestyle jigging rod similar to mine. Both BPS and Shamino make freestyle jigging rods for spin reels, so they must be used somewhere. can anyone shed some light into the horrid prospect of spin reels entering the manly man arena of DD fishing???
