Hey guys we got a fish call yesterday....I through out a stretch 25 and stretch 30 (limited tackle on the ship) but no takers....we were in about 900 meters with a water temp of 76 degrees and trolling speed was about 3 knots.....no one caught anything but it allowed me to stratch the itch.....so how are ya'll doing in va?

Were you guys the NAVY ship that was on the way to rescue the Carolina Lady yesterday morning when she was on fire yesterday 50 nm east of Quimby, VA?

Maybe try some sea witches/ballyhoo out there - it's pretty early for much of anything - maybe a stray Bluefin?

I can't say were we are, but we are 8 hours ahead of VA.

All they said on the VHF radio while they were talking to U.S.C.G. was 90 ft. "fishing vessel" so I don't know which it was. The fire got put out. Nobody was seriously injured. 3 guys on board. The last we heard they had a sister boat escorting them back to OI. we lost radio contact with them about 1600 - I guess they were heading too far south. All they lost was their steering. Lucky guys.

Nathan - WOW! 8 hours time difference EAST of VA Beach! Not sure what you would catch way out there! Maybe ask the Capt. to speed up to 6 knots and try it. Keep us posted if you catch something. Maybe a cedar plug or high speed spoon?

The last time I was there the best 2 baits were a high speed feather or an inline with a big drone spoon ...YFT and some other critters depending where you are in that peticular area

From an actual radio communication onboard USS Thorn, circa 1999.

"Bridge, Aft Lookout......Bridge, Make pitch and turns for 5 knots, maintain current heading. Aye, wait one.... Bridge, Combat,....Bridge..., WTF? (paraphrasing)Stand by Combat, Aft Lookout, Bridge..., Aft Lookout..., Pitch and turns for 5 knots, maintaining heading, no turns scheduled, but I feel a GQ coming up. Yeah I got that word, Thank you sir.."

30 minutes 1 kingfish, and 2 1/2 bonitos latter: "GENERAL QUARTERS, GENERAL QUARTERS.. ALL HANDS MAN........."

A couple of Hours latter PNC B: "Where you fishing during GQ? Ah... yeah Chief, WTF! (not paraphrasing) Skipper saw you, you know,....I did not know that Chief.

So to this day I believe 2 things:

1. Spruance Destroyer fantails are the best.
2. I can talk my way out of most anything.
