Both the Mariner, which is a Mercury with a different cover and the Yamaha should be good engines. They are old technology carbed 2 strokes, and hence are pretty thirsty compared to 4 stroke or direct injected two strokes, but will run your boat just fine if you take care of them and are careful keeping up with fuel issues due to ethanol gas. Dunno how much the GW Sailfish weighs, but probably more than you think, don't skimp on the trailer or truck.

I run both 2 stroke and 4 stroke.... never seem to have E10 problems with the 2 stroke. What kind of gas problems are you seeing??? The 4 banger seems to need filters regularly and sufers from internal corrosion due to E10. Seems like the 2 cycle ( oil in the gas ) is fine. let me know what problems you see

the carburated yammies were tough motors I know of one that was a 1990 200hp that had 4000 hrs on it. The only real problem with them was corrosion, the bolts had a tendency to seize up in the aluminum it they were not greased. I would definately choose the yamaha in that date range

Phishfinder, I actually haven't had problems yet with E-10, unless you count the large increase in the amount of grunge my Racor filters are catching. The alcohol really is a potent tank cleaner. Supposedly, you can get problems from "phase separation" when the alcohol absorbs enough water that the 2 stroke oil doesn't mix properly. This happens when you have fuel in the tank for a long period of time since the boat has an open venting system on the tank and alcohol absorbs water (from the air) readily. You may already know all this stuff, just posting it for others if you do. I use the new marine Sta-bil every time I add gas. Also have used Startron. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
