I have a 1993 Evinrude I need to get repaired. Starter motor spins but won't engage flyweel.

Any suggestions for a good Evinrude mechanic? I live in Silver Spring.

Thanks.

Before you send it to a mechanic, have you checked to make sure your battery isn't weak? Not familiar with those engines, but the starter may not be spinning fast enough to send the gear up to engage the flywheel.

Just give the starter shaft a squirt of Liquid Wrench - don't use WD-40. It's a common problem after a few years. You do need a good battery charge too to get the starter spinning fast enough.

Glad it was only a cheap fix. Give it a little squirt once a year (or twice a year if you have a long season).

WD-40 is not really for lubrication. It is better for removing rust to free parts up.It also removes grease.

In this case the gear needed to be lubricated to raise up and engage the flywheel.WD-40 might have fixed it-but then the motor sits for 1-2 weeks and problem is back. Skip
