Wait.......that didn't come out right. What I meant to say was "Man, you cannot possibly know how much I really REALLY love you!"
Seriously though, I'm dying to get my little boat out there during the cold weather and at least hook into one of those things. My biggest reel is a 70 VS (Penn Int'l) with 150# proline and 200# topshot. My next biggest are International 30's. I've got my regular gaff and my homemade Fisherman's/Wireman's gaff is ready. If I can just get a weather window.
The first time I ever went tuna fishing was in Feb 1996 at HI and we caught 18 (EIGHTEEN!!) large-to-giant bluefin tuna before noon. We kept one 72"-er. I've got a photo of one I got up to the boat that was likely 400+ lbs.
Five of us chartered a boat, but two of the guys puked the whole time and the other three of us caught all those fish. We even put the mate in the chair and he caught one or two. We also caught several other fish that day (AJ's, blackfin, YFT also). It was the biggest rush. The sucky thing is that it was my first time and I really didn't appreciate how lucky we were to get into those big fish. I've never seen anything like it since then. Every time I've been charter-boat-tuna-fishing since then we have had success with YFT's.
Now, this past year, I started going out in my own boat (the "SS Tuna Repellant") and have had the crappiest luck.
I gotta get out there.
Congrats!!!!
