I hear they've got CHARTER FISHING scams out the wahzoo. They'll trick you into mounting average sized fish(FL trick, too) and then sell your fish and give you a scolding or worse because you're just a DUMB HAOLE(how-lee).I've read that you have to search for a decent outfit to fish with, but coming from the mainland means we're just know nothing idiots to many of their charter guys.I hope that this is not true, but they might kinda hate outsiders there as I hear similar stuff about surfing there too. Please prove these reports wrong, because I'd like to go there one day and feel it is worthwhile.I can find many places to get sneered at right here in NC,so why travel 6000 miles?GOOD LUCK!

Aloha - I travel to Hawaii on business 5 or 6 times a year and have fished out of Oahu but not Maui. It's the same waters and you will have a ball. I've never been mistreated or disrespected. The last time we went out, there were 4 people on the boat and we caught nine large bigeye Ahi and one nice Wahoo. Here's a chart of what you can expect to catch at what time of the year. I'll be there in March. Mahalo.

Maui fishing seasons... what's the best month to land a marlin in Hawaii?

You'll LOVE Maui... Going back in July. Fishing wise, I was able to book a half day charter EASILY, by just walking down to the docks the day before. You only need half a day. You'll be in 500 feet of water in 20 minutes, so the travel time is cut down significantly. Unless things have changed drastically, Wahoo and Mahi Mahi are the fish of choice. That was in July anyway. So many more things to do. SO I don't bore everyone, b mail me where your staying, and I'll give you the heads up on what where and how...

I lived there for three years in the late 1980s. At that time it was pretty easy to walk on to a charter out of Honolulu. But my favorite was flats fishing on the windward side of Oahu. You can wade out and fly or spincast. There's bonefish there but lots of other fish too. I knew some by Hawaiian names that I can't remember now other than one fish called a pappy, but plenty of beautiful and colorful fish. Don't be afraid to throw spinners right off the shore over the reefs either.

Edit: Just noticed you said you were going to Maui. I never shore fished there, but I would imagine it's even better than Oahu.

iN LAHANIA TRY THE sTART mE uP. They report on sportfisherman pretty regular I've been out w/them in 03.BTW if you want to keep a fish you need to make arrangements beforehand. Most boats sell their catch as part of their income.Have fun.
