Fished my first striper tournament yesterday but nothing good to report, catch wise. We drifted eels most of the day on both sides of the high rise, around buoy 8 and near to the concrete ships. We marked some fish and some bait, but could not get a bite. It was a bit sporty on the ocean side, so being in a 21’er we stayed inside the bridge most of the day. Overall the weather was better than we expected given the reports from the night before.

We had a couple eels on bobbers, one deep to see what the bottom would turn up and a couple on 3 oz weights using planers to spread out the lines. The only thing we caught all day was a sand shark and two gulls that desperately wanted one of our eels, picking it up and dropping it multiple times.

I understand 36 boats were in the tourney and only 11 weighed fish, with a very nice 55 pound fish taking first prize. And of course when doing a bit of cleaning and settling up back at the Kiptopeke Inn we had to watch another boat’s crew clean their catch limit, with one looking 25 pounds plus. Oh well, at least someone caught fish yesterday.
