The N.J. Marine Fisheries Council in a unanimous vote Thursday evening approved the 2007 summer flounder season to run from May 26 to Sept. 10. The council also approved a minimum fish size of 17 inches and a daily bag limit of eight fish per angler.

The council's decision was one of 4 options on the table and was made after several hours of energetic discussion by about 150 saltwater fisherman at the Galloway Township Library.

Although the council weighed four different options, they all lead to one thing: an almost 40 percent reduction in the fluke catch this year.

New Jersey anglers had a harvest limit of 1,443,000 fluke in 2006, but the federal government has ordered a reduction to 954,272 fish.
