The last general assembly passed bills requiring DNR to submit applications to MDE and the Corp of Engineers to resume dredging fossil oyster shell in the upper bay. It was sold as being necesary for oyster restoration, but in reality is an attempt to force DNR to resume the commercial put and take oyster repletion program that has done nothing for oyster restoration and has not developed a sustainable oyster industry. DNR has prepared a draft permit application to dredge fossil oyster shell on Man O War Shoal. It has been given to the Oyster Advisory Commission for review as the Commission must recommend that it be submitted to the permitting agencies for it to go forward. When this has been presented in the past ALL stakeholders have opposed it: upper bay charter captains, Baltimore County Oyster Committee, Sail Dredgers Committee, MSSA and CCA. This is a bad idea to destroy one of the few reliable fishing sreas in this part of the bay used by both recreational and commercial fishermen. Anyone who feels strongly about this should call their legislators who voted for this and ask them to reverse this requirement next session.
