Out of curiosity I went to the ASMFC web site and found this related to Maryland law enforcement news, (www.asmfc.org):

"The biggest enforcement problem we continue to see are illegally set gill nets. This includes: unattended drift gill nets and anchored gill nets. Officers continue to seize these illegal nets and have apprehended some violators. Enforcement is made more difficult by State regulations that allow the nets to be fished during the hours of darkness".

Maybe I'm missing something here, but can somebody clarify why Maryland allows fishing these nets during hours of darkness?? Could this be just one of the old, out date, regulations that nobody pays attention to??

----It takes longer to reach the fishing grounds with a Large boat with a Detroit in it , It Takes longer to set nets & Bouys , than 34 rods on Planer Boards , The Sun Comes up later on the Chesapeake in the Winter , The law allows a early start to allow all these things to be Done in the DARK , With Running Lights on --Then you fish in the warmth of 31 degree water & 23 degree air temp unless its a N Wester with a Chill factor ---

Your Quote from the Asmfc Site ----"are illegally set gill nets. This includes: unattended drift gill nets and anchored gill nets. Officers continue to seize these illegal nets and have apprehended some violators. Enforcement is made more difficult by State regulations that allow the nets to be fished during the hours of darkness".

----My Question is? "The biggest enforcement problem we continue to see " Who is WE? The Author of the Missleading Paragraphs? A Person, Or group that want more Chesapeake Fish From Maryland , The East Coast Providing BANK? for the Northern " Harvesters " Comm. & Rec. ?You Anglers are Smart enough to see the Forest, Regardless of these ASMFC Trees --Some one posted from N. J. about how the Tree Huggers & Do Gooders in that state do this & That --My charter Anglers get only 2 Fish , N. J. anglers get a Third with a state issued tag --The Va. Boats , Capt's & mates get 2 fish each for personal Consumtion per trip --2x2=4 x30#+orMinus --Thats a BIG meal ---

---"Since ASMFC packs so much clout it would seem that regulations we set in Maryland might be more to their satisfaction"----Lets face it , We HAVE Bent over for years --We Have Sacrificed , 5 years , of Closure,While they Fished Right on as nothing was Happening , & NOW when we Have provided a World Class Striped Bass Fishery, Maryland "Dark" fishing is a Problem ---I Don't see anyone *****ing about the 24/7. Striper fishing in these Northern states --You Stated our Law, "Gill netting in Maryland, if the season is open, is Monday thru Friday, 3 am to 6 pm. " & our Rec Laws are NO Fishing for Rock 12 Midnight ---0500---Looks like to me we should be concered with the WEES in the Asmfc--It's funny when the Pot calls the Kettle Black---Oh Well this & fishing Too.
