You can get involved easily. Go to the CCA web site, ccamd.com click on grassroots, send an email to the St. Mary's states attorney voicing your opinion regarding Mr. Janda's case.
CCA does everything except fill in your comments.
Joseph B. Janda, Jr., the 22 year old commercial fisherman who has had 43 cases filed against him for violations of natural resources laws in four county District Courts since 2002 will have his current case heard in the District Court of St. Mary's County this Friday, February 13. He is a prime example of how our current legal system seems incapable of protecting our public resources and deterring repeat offenders from continuing their criminal behavior. Please contact the State's Attorney for St. Mary's County, Richard D. Fritz, and ask him to vigorously prosecute this case and if Mr. Janda is found guilty to urge the judge to assign the maximum penalty permitted by law.

Not trying to be smart, but what is the maximum penalty, a $500 fine? This is where the problem lies. $500 is just an overhead cost to poachers IF they get caught. A big IF...

If it where $50,000, then this might be a deterent... or chop off their friggin' fingers, one by one, then the hands.

The common sense approach is to confiscate the gear. This could be the boat, nets, truck, trailer, etc. used to poach.

The drug dealers lose their cars when caught - same should apply to poachers.

No doubt the fines are too low and looked at by some poachers as nothing more then a "business" expense.

Enough of these cases get made public - I think things might change.Fines need to be a deterent.Losing a boat sure would be a big deterent .

Then sell the boat at auction and let DNR keep the money :clapping2:.

Skip... Agreed.. I think that would do it for sure. Drug dealers lose their cars, houses and other assets through the civil process..(and Administratively in the case of the FEDS)... Meaning these vehicles and such are forfeited when used to further the crime or purchased with money obtained thru selling drugs. Cash is also seized and can be inferred as drug proceeds if the conditions merit. These funds are used to purchase things law enforcement needs to investigate these crimes. Something tells me that if a few boats, trucks, trailers and cash were seized by DNR the risk would no longer outweigh the benefit of poaching.

I'd suggest emailing direct. The fact that CCA and voter voice collects your data is kinda creepy.
Bahahaha... Creepy?

It asks for your address, etc. so that it can help you contact elected officials for your voting district. If you're uncomfortable with that - just contacting the State's Attorney directly is good too - but for more complex issues it may not be as easy to hit all of your elected officials at one time.

The CCA website makes it easy to e-mail the St. Marys County Officals. The WBAL radio station website also has a link to contact Govenor O'Malley. The Govenor is going to cut staffing at the DNR and stop funding for the DNR helicoptors to save money. It will also cut court cost since cases such as the Janda case will not happen without the DNR. Join the CCA or MSA and get involved. Tell the Govenor you are going to spend your dollars some were else. The State could confiscate the property of the repeat offenders and sell to support the DNR. Whatever happened to 3 strikes and you are out? Can someone out there add torpedo tubes to there boat? I think that may be an option coming soon on Judge 27'.

Yes creepy......

Any and all messages sent by you through the system to your elected officials are saved to our database. CCA Maryland can review all messages sent from the system
Of course you could just provide a link.... but then you wouldn't be able to see the messages would you....

Hmmmmmm.........

Well, Cap? If there is any truth to the opening statement in this thread; "Joseph B. Janda, Jr., the 22 year old commercial fisherman who has had 43 cases filed against him for violations of natural resources laws in four county District Courts since 2002," then clearly the young man is impaired, or at least a little slow...

Capt George,

I watched Mr. Janda represent himself in court, and ask for a continuance. He seemed to be a capable human being. If it turns out that Mr. Janda doesn't understand the law, it doesn't change the facts that he's a convicted poacher who continues to steal from us. We all know that ignorance is bliss, but that's never a valid defense. I don't believe anyone here really wants to lynch the guy - just prosecute him as the law prescribes, and if found guilty give him penalties that match his crimes.

With 43 offenses, it's obvious that he has no comprehension of right from wrong.

He needs psychiatric help.
