Is there any point in fishing the gunpowder this time of year? I might be able to go out this weekend but its a long drive and I could probably catch some stockies on the pax, but i would prefer wild fish. Also is it true streamer fishing isnt that good on the gunpowder?

Check the water flow before you go. It was very high after all the rain and is coming down gradually. I am told that there are few "food Fish" in the upper reaches of the Gun. I have taken fish on a wolly bugger in the lower section. If you check the backwater angler web page there may be some hints as to what the fish are taking. If not, just give them a call.

When I lived in MD, I would fish the Gunpowder through the winter. If the water conditions were stable and clear, fish could be caught. I did not do much traditional down and across style streamer fishing but I would dead drift small wooly buggers in the deeper pools and catch fish. Also starting in about another month you can start looking for winter stonefly activity on sunny days when the temperature gets to 50 or so in the afternoon.

I went yesterday and caught 8 browns on a small streamer. On any other stream I would refer to what I caught as 2 fish and 6 dinks, but on the GP there are no dinks. They all count. Water was up, but was but not too high.

Had an ok day last saturday with snow falling and a really good day the week before in pouring rain w/ dries. The right fly to have would have been a #22 Blue Winged Olive, but a tiny griffiths gnat (w/ no peacock herl) or a tiny parachute adams seemed to work. I don't like nymphing there, but other people swear by it. For the last several years, I haven't really fished there much outside of December and March.

I always thought the river was worth a try any day of the year. Even during the periods of highest water, fish could still be had along the banks. I've always fished the section just below the dam. Egg patterns (white and peach colored) worked OK too. Good luck if you go, and post a report!
