Guyz:

Got a 50.00 Cabelas gift card for my B day:clap:! Got this Penn Captiva Live Line reel at Tri State show (new, 28.00:yes:) It may be on the light side, but it seems to have a good drag and I probably wont use it all that much (I mostly throw lures)..

Need help picking a rod from Cabelas. I found these:

Cabela's -- Fenwick® Inshore Spinning Rods FINS66-1017

Cabela's -- All Star Pro Series™ Inshore Spinning Rods PRI TTS2-S

Cabela's Salt Striker Inshore Spinning Rods Item number: IK - 122618

Also: What line is typically used for live lining (mono vs braid)..
I would sure appreciate comments/suggestions..

Thanks!

It's tough buying a rod on line unless you have one already or a friend does.

Some brands sell a medium action that is the same as another brand's light action.Sorta like buying shoes - sizes are not all the same.

FWIW: I like a fast action rod in the medium rating. You need a fairly firm rod to toss Spot plus it helps set the hook.

Ugly Stick makes a a 6'6" inshore rod that is light on the wallet and is of good quality, nice strong and senstive rod. If you're looking to get a higher end rod, the St. Croix Tidemaster 6'6" MH is one of the nicest spinning rods I've picked up.

Steve if you did I would have ordered one buddy..

I have 5 in my cabelas "Cart"..including a ugly stick light inshore (I do like the US "Light" series rods (for the $$)

I would not normally buy a 200.00 rod, so any fenwick fans out there, let me know what you think of the one I listed..

I have used two of the CLL4000's for the last two years. Bought my third from Tylers a few weeks ago. I rigged them with 20lb. mono, mated to 7ft Penn slammer foam grip rods.
Work very well for LL and do double duty for throwing shads and topwater plugs.
I love how I can bait them up, dead or alive and set them in a rod holder unattended while fishing another rod, or doing something else. That being said, I like a rod with a longer butt section, to reach down far enough to hit the rod holder pin, keeping the reel high enough off the base. It also helps in more leverage and casting the plugs further.
Not sure any of this matters to you, but the 200 dollar fenwick on clearance seems to have a short butt, but that must be a heck of a rod to retail at that.
I went with the Ugly inshore lite rod 6'6" for the third reel, easier to handle and hopefully provide more backbone. We were catching 22-24in. blues last season off the bottom in sixty feet of water. Trying to turn them before running to the other side tangleing other lines was a blast.

inexpensive but good

I don't usually buy "cheap" tackle, but I just fell in love with a group of rods that, IMHO, are perfect for LL stripers, etc....I have 4 of them now...fished them all last year without any problems. I found them at Eastern Marine in Newark DE, but I'm sure they sell them elsewhere. They are Tsunami Classic spinning rods; very light and small diameter. They come in several actions and I prefer the ML action for LL and the M action for tossing lures, both at 7ft. The only thing I don't really like is the short butt section on the ML action rods...could be a couple inches longer to sit in rod holders a little more securly.

I have 2 Fenwick Inshore rods. Bought them on FFO maybe 5-6 years ago. One is a casting rod and the other is a spiinner.

The handles on mine are long enough to fit in the rod holders, but at 7' long they're pushing the envelope a bit for my liking. Decent rods, nothing to get real excited about.

The Fenwick is built using a Fuji reel seat and Fuji SIC guides. The Allstar uses aluminum oxide guides and the Cabela rod lists the reel seat as being graphite. Too generic for my liking.

Mike, Why in the world would you pair up a $29 reel on a Fenwick rod ???? Stick with the ugly sticks or check out the Cabalas Salt Striker, thats the one I got from Rod at TriState on Sat. It's only 90bucks and a real nice match for those Captiva reels we bought.
