#21 Tony Acetta in silver w/white feather or white. Rigged from the lure: 10' of 50 lb. test mono tied to lure, then a silver bead chain swivel, then 12'-15' of 50-60 lb. mono., to a ball bearing swivel to complete the leader. In-line sinker (the kind with bead chain on each end) 3 oz. - 6 oz. Connect to mono main line with another ball bearing swivel. Fish far enough back that it is behind everything else in your spread. Lots of swivels.

The 11/0 and 13/0 Crippled alewife in chartruese/green rigged in the same manner also work well. They have less wobble/wander, and are a little more manageable. The 11/0 can be rigged in tandem with a 3-way to an 8 oz. bullet head parachute or 6 oz. big eye bucktail with good results. Don't use any additional weight.

Doesn't catch the numbers of fish like umbrellas and tandems, but when they do get hit, a higher proportion of the bites are bigger fish. Silver #21 Tony fished ~250' back w/ 4oz. in-line off my outrigger caught my biggest rockfish in the Bay (52" at the HI Buoy in late April). Have caught numerous 44"+ fish on spoons fished in this manner in the Bay, especially in Spring and around Thanksgiving.

Can also fish deep off a 3-way with 20 oz. - 28 oz. drop sinker or Mojo, especially on a wire line shorter and deeper than the rest of your spread.

Secret spoon is a johnny come lately, certainly catches fish, but I would fish a reliable or Montauk. Unlike the CA these spoons must be fished at the right speed with the right tackle to be effective. Be aware that spoons wander side to side quite a bit, so they work best when run close to a stretch.:D

Spoons many times are Unforgiving as the Line of Entry for the line is Critical ---I use 1--6 inlines Bannana Type --Cuts down on line twist --All other Lines I use Bell sinkers , Then again because of line twist --As far as ball chain swivels if ya want to use em --Toliet & sink Ball chain in bulk , with modified Standard ends will work ---Shiny swivels are a NO -No as blues are Migrating No, Too --

Most times I have at least 1-2 spoons out.My favorite is the 13/0 Cripple Alewive.Chart. is always good- gold is great in cold water- no idea why but trust me -it works.Silver is good on sunny days and pure white can be good on cloudy days.I use custom painted blue/white spoons early April to match the Herring.

Big thing with spoons is to use a rod with a limber tip.I like 7' rods or you can go the $$$ route and order bunker spoon noodle rods that are 9' long.Wire is best but braid is almost as good plus rarely breaks like wire does.

I run the spoons similar to the others- one back 320' with a 6 oz parachute as a weight/lure.

In spring I will run them alone off the farthest board postion-100' back.

In fall/winter- I use a 12-20 oz MoJo as the weight- follwed by the spoon.

I like 25-30' leaders.Sampo ball bearing snap swivel-15' of 60 lb clear Ande-a Sampo ball bearing swivel-then 15 more feet of leader.

The 13/0 spoon might look big but I caught alot of Rock under 30'' on it.Wish they made a bigger one .

The big bunker spoons are great but they will wander around the spread.Best way back or off the downrigger-drop back about 45' or so. Skip

Capt. George- stop teasing me :D- do tell, please.

I called the owner of Cripple Alewive about making bigger spoons. He was really nice-in fact went out fishing with me.He said the demand would not be enough to tool a new die for bigger spoons.

If you know someone making them-I sure would like to know. Skip
