I've seen this many times over the past 20+ years. I remember one year in the early 2000's when I launched my bass boat at Marley Creek Marina, there were thousands of dead bunker all along the shorelines. I remember watching a gentleman using a grain shovel, loading trash bag after trash bag. Oh the smell.

 

It's a bunch of menhaden. They die if you look at them funny. MDE already investigated this one- the explanation at the link is incorrect. Thermal inversion is not what happened. Just a normal low DO event.

Not a poke at you Mike, but maybe MDE could explain what caused this "normal" low dissolved oxygen event. Just because it happens with regularity, it should not be labeled as normal IMO.

 

There’s no water movement down there. The fish swim in and get caught like a net.

First the crabs are gone and now the menhaden are dead. I wonder if the crabs are dead on the bottom of the river? The crab potters were pulling up pots with all dead crabs in the Bay last month? The Patapsco is in bad shape .Maybe the Catfish will eat the dead fish and crabs if they don't kill them all first.

 

Isn't there a fish kill every year ? Up north in the bay ? Mother Nature is doing her job.

 

What ever they won't , can't fix, or don't understand is labeled as normal . All our fish that have vanished over the years is normal too. Regardless of the reason. Normally, if you pour pollutants in the water or overharvest a species, it is normal for them to die and eventually vanish from the ecosystem. Case closed

 

The inner harbor doesn’t really have much movement as far as the water is concerned. They should put some kind of huge water propulsion system down there somewhere just to move the water.

When all the fish die that need oxygen to survive, there will be no more fish kills. Problem solved . Well, Snakeheads could have survived but not killing them would have been too easy

Not for Snakeheads and Tarpon. What they haven't killed incidentally , they kill on purpose , Move along The best 2 things they did was lower the rec limit on Crabs to 1bu per boat and lower the striper limit to 1 pp. The Crabs will out last the Stripers because it's pretty hard to kill them with catch and release . You'd have to step on them to kill them .
