Nice!!!!!Last month TV 11 news - WBAL , contacted me to see if I would take reporter / camera man out for few hours to catch Blue Catfish. They are doing a story about the Cats - wanted a rec. angler point of view. I think comm. fishermen and businesses will be covered too.
We agreed on Thursday 13th at 10 am. Well , last year the Blue Cats were thick - literally coolers full in few hours. This year - so far off Sandy Point / Podickery / Magothy - been very slow.
I went out Monday and Tuesday - only getting a few White Cats , despite the freshest Menhaden around ( Angler's ). Both days wind was against current - boat swaying might hurt chances. My plan was to put 1 or 2 on a weighted line under a marker jug. Weds was windy so I did not bother.
Launched very early Thursday - figured get a Blue Cat before they arrived at 10 am.

Friend caught 4 Blue Cats from Sandy Point beach Weds evening so I set up near shore. Current was almost slack - low tide.

I tried 3 different depths - only getting 2 White Cats. Pulled lines at 9:50 am and ran back to ramp. Phone rang right at 10:00 - just as I tied boat up.
Kim Dacey was reporter - cameraman was Bo Harrison , Buddy Harrison Jr son. Too cool - he remembered me recovery anchor for his dad. I explained to Kim how tough bite has been - she took it in stride but I could see disappointment. I had told her how good last year had been.
They did interview before we headed out - I was thinking - 3 hours to get a Cat. Bay was flat so I ran at 35 knots - trying to squeeze few extra minutes of fishing time. Ran up to mouth of Magothy - incoming current just starting. For once - no wind , baits set nicely on lines with just kiss of slack.
We discussed how to film / land the Cat - Kim would reel it in while Bo filmed. Very cool to see all that goes into news casting. Saw one rod tip move - then line really racing off bait runner. The Whites tend to play with bait - Blues most times grab and go.
Bo filmed line going off reel as I put lever ON and felt weight of fish. Kim did well - slowly saw a Blue cat. Came into net and into boat - never been so glad to see a Blue cat.

Reeled other lines in and put fresh baits on - even though still fine. Cut the old bait into pieces and tossed around boat. Got another hit - but a White Cat , bummer.
Next hit took off - bigger Blue Cat that gave Kim a good fight. She thought it was huge - I'm guessing 10-11 pounds. Showed her photos of 25 pounders from last year.

Kim then went to work - holding up the fish while Bo filmed. I sat back and watched - take after take to get everything just right. Bo adjusting camera - Kim adjusting script - Blue Cat wiggling making for another take.

Clock was ticking by way too fast - soon it was time to go. Bo asked if I could idle slow near bay bridge - Kim wanted to do a lead in to story. Took a few tries and going south of bridge to get right light - but should be very good.
We got back to dock and Kim interviewed two people from CBF ( Chesapeake Bay Foundation ). Then they came back so I could clean the Cats - stomach had digested fish , likely Menhaden and hundreds of small clams.
I doubt with all the blood - that will be on TV , lol. I gave Kim the fillets - she might cover cooking / eating them as part of the story. Really cool media is covering these Blue Cats - maybe drum up interest for charters / comm. , restaurants. The meat is really good - especially if bled out while alive.
Kim promised to give me notice - story to air in May.
Climate change.Very cool Skip. Curious, what is the angle of the story? If you know and don't want to say or were sworn to secrecy I understand.
Cool post Skip. Remember when it used to be the stingrays eating everything.
