Common wisdom is that you can't jig up fish in the spring and fall runs of ocean rock, but my buds and I are putting in a lot of time to prove this wrong. Yesterday was one of the days Dem Murlin Boyz (funny story to the name), Phil (Rattletrap), Brian (Echo), Jim Hensley and myself, gave it a shot and we did come up with some fish.

About seven we left PLO on Phils Grady headed for Smith Point. When we arrived we found a good size fleet trolling on the western side. Almost right away we saw some bait and marks on the meter and we dropped some jigs down. Pretty quickly Brian hooked up to a 30 some incher. It fell into the slot so back it went. That was it for a long while.

When you troll you can cover ground with baits in the water, but jigging you want to have something to aim at, balls of bait or fish marks, preferable both and it took till almost two till we found the right combination of bait and marks. By the time we found them we were all by ourselves back in Maryland water. Over the next two hours we boated seven fish. Four were from 33-38"s and three were from 25-27"s. So we ended the day with eight fish, which we thought wasn't bad for this type of fishing. It sure isn't the fast action of schools of fish under birds, but it proves that you can jig up these migratory fish if you put in the time.:thumbup:

Actually 9 fish if you count the one Brian threw back my brother. Thought we would see more fish and bait but it was real scattered until we got on this one channel edge and we finally got our opportunity.

Back at the dock we met two boats that were trolling one of which had one fish for a day of trolling and the other had three. We heard B-Faithful out there and he seemed to have a pretty good day along with Skip but most of the boats were picking them off but slowly. The advantage of jigging is being able to pick up and run to the fish if you see birds or hear of a good report. The downside is when they are that scattered it's hard to blind jig up fish all day. You just can't cover enough ground. We got lucky and found them late in the day. Sometimes it's all or nothing.

Jamie its not a " successful" trip unless Phil burns a minimum 40 gallons of fuel...:thumbup: At a buck fifty a gallon, let him have his fun.

While not as successful as we had hoped, ALWAYS a good time hanging with Dem Maryland Boys. Never laughed so damn hard as i did, Friday..:clap::clap::clap:

Jamie, at one point we were only 33 miles from the bridge and I was thinking about it. If it had of been as calm as it turned out later we might have seen you.
Here's Dem Boyz with a couple we got.

Good thing for me that it's all about the others catching fish when out on my boat:rolleyes:

Next time you guys hit that area, take a run to the target ship. Try the eastern side of the ship out to 50 yards. it may shock you this time of the year. Old eastern shore waterman honey hole for bigguns.

HB,

Great report!:yes::thumbup:
It's a true testament to being good fishermen to be able to just find fish in schools this time of year in that area much less jig them up. I would say that is some serious LTGing man!
Thanks for posting, nice picture too! Might make it to the TF homepage for the reports this coming week;-)
