Schools of juvenile herring have been present this summer in larger numbers than I can recall. Once plentiful, river herring (alewife and blueback herring) played an important role as forage for predatory fish like striped bass. River herring stocks have been decimated by overfishing, pollution, and dams. A moratorium on river herring was enacted in 2012. I am hopeful that this summer's good year class is a result of the conservative management decision to restore the stock.
