Been trying to splash the new boat at CBBT for a couple weeks now and the forecast for Thursday and Friday looked favorable.
Made a couple last minute calls for fishing buddies – managed to hook up with Dave (SPYNET000).
Left home at 3:00am Thursday and met SPYNET000 at Mike Rose’s house after a 3 hour tow. Continued for another 2-1/2 hours and after a quick stop for some grub and fuel we hit the water.
Left Kiptopeke ramp at about 9:00 and headed the Parker 2320 towards the CBBT. WX forecast called for 1-2 footers but as we headed past the concrete boats we were met by easy 3-4’s. Turned on the windshield wipers and continued on. Water temp at that point was 34 ̊.
Headed to the 4th island – check the FF – nada. Water temp up to 36 ̊. Moved over to the pilings between island 2 and 3 and found marks. The current was ripping and it was hard to get a good drift between the pilings so one guy to the wheel while the other one fished.
The bite was hot here. We were bailing 24” – 32” fish all day. We figured about 100 fish between the two of us.
Got back to the ramp at dusk. Met a couple TF’ers there and the VA Marine Patrol. Nice guys – just wanted a peek in out fish box.
Dinner and beers at Kelly’s – ended a long day at 9:00 pm.
Up at 5:00 the next morning and opened Stingrays for breakfast. Talked with WildBill, Cattail and a couple of others over breakfast then off to the ramp for another day.
We found much calmed water and returned to the same general area as the day before. Fishing was good only the fish seemed to be a little less spread out. Once you found them it was on. Started to see some birds working just north of us so we shot over only to find fast moving pods of smaller fish.
We decided to take a run to the ocean for bigger fish. Went north off of Cape Charles saw a couple other boats. No birds, no marks and lots of Obama jokes proved that the ocean bite was slow.
Back to the pilings to finish up an awesome couple days of fishing. We figured we landed about 200 fish in two days.
Max water temp - 38 ̊, 7”-10” BKD’s, Stingsilver, Crippled Herring and droppers. They were hungry and hit them all.
Thanks to Dave (SPYNET000) for good company and for being my second steering station!
